God created man in the Garden of Eden and said, “Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.” Why did God tell them not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Like the name of the fruit, once one eats of it, he will come to know good and evil, and his own perceptions are formed. All people are born in the state of blankness, and as they live in the world, as they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and feel with their hands, their own perceptions, ways, and decision-making are formed. Then they begin to judge, “This is right. This is wrong. This was done well. This was wrong.” The reason spiritual life is difficult is that the judgments we make are different from the judgment God makes. There is no reason for it to be difficult aside of this.
